Bus Stop Poets drop their sophomore album today. It’s called Leave It To The Kids, and features 10-tracks of tasty Detroit-flavored rock.
With a sound influenced by Bob Seger, MC5, and The Stooges, the band’s music exudes the potent beef of Motown blended with edgy roots-based rock and roll and cool pop relish. The Vinyl District’s Mike Olinger described the band as "Crosby, Stills and Nash (Down Under)...with a lilting narrative quality that conjures up mid-70s Eagles."
Formed in 2012, Bus Stop Poets dropped their self-titled debut album the following year. The lead single from the album, “Beautiful Day,” was synced by Chevy for a national television ad, along with appearing in two episodes of Showtime’s Shamless.
The first track on the album is “You Won’t Miss Me (Here),” delivering wonderful female vocal harmonies sliding over a tender yet compelling piano-driven melody.
Highlights include “Blow,” an oozing Mississippi-blues-flavored number with soft gleaming strings accenting rolling guitars and radiant vocal harmonies inflected with gospel savors. There’s an alluring energy to this track, mysterious, sensuous, and creamy.
There’s a smooth yet galvanizing flow to this song, making it irresistible listening.
The title track kicks things up a notch, opening on shimmering spangled guitars and rumbling drums. The melody exudes hints of surging punk filaments amalgamated with bubble-gum pop vocal harmonies. When the tune climaxes, the combination of percolating harmonies, jangly guitars, and ‘50s pop-shop flavors presents a bright wall-of-sound.
The intro to “Don’t Call Me Criminal” blends a scrumptious acoustic guitar with a wickedly haunting harmonic flow, as the catchy pulsing rhythm infuses the tune with a swaying cadence. A gorgeous piano backed by gleaming guitar accents and a drawling organ provides a delicious blend of colors.
“You Won’t Miss Me (There)” forms the other sonic bookend to the album, traveling on lustrous banjo tones topped by buttery female vocal harmonies. There’s a smooth yet galvanizing flow to this song, making it irresistible listening.
With Leave It To The Kids, Bus Stop Poets deliver cap-a-pie infectious music, full of innovative flavors, mesmerizing rhythms, and grand vocals.
