Billy Corgan Talks Pumpkins Reunion
If I tell you that Billy Corgan and Lars Ulrich were talking on Beats 1 recently, your first instinct might be to reflexively leave this article page, and perhaps to rage vomit. It's understandable! Neither of them have covered themselves in glory over the years, especially if you remember the days of Napster. However, if you have any interest in Smashing Pumpkins, and if you liked rock music in the '90s you surely do, then just hold on. Corgan is talking D'Arcy Wretzky again, and you better absolutely, positively give up any hope of D'Arcy ever reuniting with her old bandmates.
You probably know the story. Smashing Pumpkins was at the forefront of the rock scene in the '90s, but Corgan was never the most lovable dude. Eventually, he had a fallout with seemingly everybody, but especially D'Arcy, who was the Pumpkins' bass player in the glory days. Now, though, some of the band is getting back together for a Smashing Pumpkins tour. The one glaring omission, though, is D'Arcy.
Anyway, back to Corgan's chat with Ulrich. Lars asked Corgan for his side of the story, and though he initially refused, naturally Billy couldn't resist expounding a bit. Corgan says that he and D'Arcy have been talking over the phone for a couple years but have no actually met in face for 19 years, which feels crazy. Though the calls were cordial, but, according to Corgan, when he and D'Arcy discussed the reunion, "It became obvious that it wasn’t the way she wanted it to be, it turned into this other thing that was reminiscent of the past."
Corgan also says that the band is "very comfortable" moving on from Wretzky. He also added, "We don’t want the shitty reality show, we really don’t. We’d rather just stay on the music, and if we can do that, great." So there you have it. Smashing Pumpkins are coming back, but D'Arcy won't be a part of it, and she likely never will.
