York-based slacker outfit Bull recently released the music video for “Bedroom Floor,” a song about “self-deprecation, thinking and saying things you don't mean whilst growing to dislike your own voice.”
The video, minimalistic and austere, projects Dutch subtitles on the screen, a gesture to the band’s fame in The Netherlands.
Bull is made up of Tom Beer, Dan Lucas, Kai West, and Tom Gabbatiss, who, in 2017 went to Germany, where they booked a two night dive bar tour of Berlin, where, as luck would have it, they ran into Spiral Stairs (Pavement) and Canshaker Pi, who invited the band to play at a house party. At the house party, running the show was producer Remko Schouten. After the party, Schouten invited Bull to record in Amsterdam at Ijland Studios.
Since then, Bull has released “Love Goo” and received deserved attention, playing on Radio 6 with Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson, as well as sharing the stage with Spiral Stairs, Squid, The Orielles, Pip Blom, and Canshaker Pi.
A clean and simple, yet redolent guitar solo injects nuances of tantalizing familiarity, as if reflecting the lyrical narration.
“Bedroom Floor” opens on remote, almost distant metallic guitars flowing into a tasty gently undulating indie-rock melody rife with Beatles-like flavors, but more delicate and laid-back. Hints of new wave and electro-pop run through the harmonics, although the tune is guitar driven.
The soft glossy lead voice infuses the lyrics with delicious intimacy and introspective textures. When the glowing harmonies kick in, the music adds depth and dimension. A clean and simple, yet redolent guitar solo injects nuances of tantalizing familiarity, as if reflecting the lyrical narration.
The video, starring Cees Paris, is shot in black and white in a blank setting, and with negligible visual modifications or movement. The only real movement is when Cees Paris takes a drag on his cigarette, or glances around nonchalantly.
“Bedroom Floor” is excellent, full of unpretentious unsullied production and jangly-lite guitars topped by wonderfully ingenuous vocals.
