Portuguese progressive death metal outfit Apotheus recently unveiled the music video for “A New Beginning,” a track from the band’s forthcoming album, The Far Star, slated to drop October 31, on Black Lion Records. The first single, “Caves of Steel,” was released at the end of August.
Apotheus released their debut album, When Hope and Despair Collide, in 2013. On The Far Star, a conceptual album, the band took a different approach, amalgamating emotion and melodies into a story narrating the tale of humankind’s ancestry. The tale was inspired by Isaac Asimov.
Each track on the album recounts another chapter in the epic chronicle. “A New Beginning” relates “the turn of events in the story as the last standing passenger has no other chance but to plant the seed.”
A hefty coruscating breakdown shifts the harmonics, and then segues into streaming potent colors backed by bravura choir-like harmonies, as a crystalline sylph’s voice imbues the tune with a lustrous tone.
“A New Beginning” opens on emerging deep synths flowing into a dark throbbing symphonic metal melody full of gleaming, tight, droning accents. Taut passionate vocals infuse the lyrics with urgent energy and remote nuances of uneasiness.
“I am the one / Who left my homeland / After all these years / Dreams were paid with tears / And after all the struggle we are / Anywhere that I roam / Nothing is all I can see / Growing the seed is the key / This is nothing like our home / And nothing is all I can see / This is all that's left to be.”
A hefty coruscating breakdown shifts the harmonics, and then segues into streaming potent colors backed by bravura choir-like harmonies, as a crystalline sylph’s voice imbues the tune with a lustrous tone. Another breakdown, light and oozing with gleaming hues, flavors the music with almost tender resonance, followed by thick growling guitars topped by a raging voice harmonizing with a gorgeous female voice.
With “A New Beginning,” Apotheus deliver orchestral rock full of surging dynamics, dense harmonics, and lustrous tantalizing harmonies.
