Alt-rock outfit Altered By Mom was conceived in Vancouver, developed in Toronto, and is now maturing in Montreal. They just dropped a new single, called “Hear That Sound.” And it’s off-the-chain-good!

According to the band, “’Hear That Sound’ is about making someone else cry. It’s such a universal yet specific moment - because people cry all the time, but when it happens, nothing feels more deeply personal.”
Made up of Devon Lougheed, Gina Kennedy, and Jamieson Williams, Altered Mom describes their sound as “like Sloan had a baby with Barenaked Ladies … and then that baby stole your cigarettes.” In 2016, they dropped Body Feels Weird, featuring “Joanne,” and later this year will drop Trapped In An MP3.
“Hear That Sound” opens on chugging metallic guitars riding an infectiously buoyant rhythm. I love the synth pulses glowing at the top of the harmonic flow, as smooth tantalizing vocals offer up the feel-good lyrics. The dual vocals, one male, the other female, infuse the tune with nuances of coruscating colors, velvety and oh, so tasty.
Altered By Mom is one band that needs to be signed to a label.
The stuttering breakdown – simple yet innovative – features two juxtaposed guitar riffs, playing off each other, like echoes, while simultaneously injecting two distinctive sonic flavors.

“Hear That Sound” is superb alt-rock infused with pop energy. Altered By Mom is one band that needs to be signed to a label. This band lays it down a contagious sound.
