ALBERTA & THE DEAD EYES DROP BEGUILING ‘MHM’
Alberta & The Dead Eyes introduce the first single, “mhm,” from their forthcoming album, No, No. You Go, slated to drop October 29.
The band formed in 2019 when David Boone visited two friends, Erik “nuntheless” Washington and Michael Snyder. Since all three were musicians, naturally they felt obligated to play together, resulting in an innovative sound they decided to take on the road for a month in 2019.
With little time to rehearse and tighten things up, they hit the road, counting on their innate talents to pull together a satisfying sound. At the end of the tour, they emerged as a solid band pushing out delicious music. In fact, they sounded so good they decided to keep the project going. A plan was established: write new material and lay down tracks for an album, followed by touring in 2020.
Unexpectedly, the course of 2020 threw a wrench into the works. Still, even though they lived on either side of the U.S, they forged ahead, using phones and video calls to share ideas, along with file sharing demos.
It’s an oozing voice, full of treacly surfaces, injecting the song with searing passion and wickedly beguiling coloration.
When it was all over, a process taking months of effort, they had an album – No, No. You Go, a blend of various styles culminating in intriguing music that must be listened to.
“mhm” opens on soulful bluesy guitars riding a muscular rhythm made up of a cavernously vibrating bassline and raw, crunching drums. Drawling and accented by howling accents, the tune flows on viscous textures, undulating with melancholic savors.
Scratchy, rasping vocals vaguely reminiscent of Bon Scott fronting Simply Red give the lyrics both an elusive familiarity and tantalizing wisps of fresh novelty. It’s an oozing voice, full of treacly surfaces, injecting the song with searing passion and wickedly beguiling coloration.
Almost like drifting on dark clouds, “mhm” rolls out low-slung steroidal layers of stripped-down alluring fat filaments of piquant sounds. Alberta & The Dead Eyes have it going on!
