The Brothers Union just released a two-track EP, entitled Silhouettes. The EP provides a foretaste of the band’s forthcoming CD, slated to drop in late summer.

The Brothers Union

Formed in 2016, in Asbury Park, NJ, The Brothers Union is made up of two sets of brothers, Mike and Sean O’Reilly, and Alec and Jon Wagstaff. Mike plays guitar and provides vocals; Sean is on bass and vocals; Alec is the drummer; and Jon is on guitar.

“There is always a tough love dynamic present in each pair of siblings,” Mike says, “but if we were in a band with four random guys, as I have been in the past, there would be no way to get around the disagreements and hostility that is bound to arise. It’s easier when you’re dealing with your brother and lifelong friends.”

The band released two EPs, Little Blue Room and Paper Hearts, in 2018. Both EPs delivered vibrant, potent alt-rock dynamics. Yet on Silhouettes, the band changes sonic direction, traveling down the road of stripped down melodies with acoustic guitars.

The two tracks on the EP are “Bluebird” and “Another Remedy.” According to Mike, “Bluebird” is “a basic love song about my girlfriend, and she loves it. She has blue eyes and I often call her my bluebird.”

Deliciously radiant overlapping harmonies give the lyrics tantalizing washes of mellow piquancy.

“Bluebird” opens on a delicate acoustic guitar flowing into a tender melody topped by Mike’s soft, affluent voice, exuding warm sonority, full of devout loving lyrics.

“I hope you're with me when we grow old / I need you more than any living soul / If not for you I'd be decomposed / Just lost and practically nothing.”

“Another Remedy” rides glistening layers of acoustic guitars, infusing the tune with gorgeous surface hues. Hints of latent pop-rock filaments, almost imperceptible, flow within the harmonics. Deliciously radiant overlapping harmonies give the lyrics tantalizing washes of mellow piquancy.

“I don't wanna be one of those that don't believe / And even when the worst is yet to come, I'll be / Holding onto ghosts, I don't wanna be like that / And even when the sun comes falling down, I'll be.”

Silhouettes is sublimely beautiful, evoking warm emerging colors and indulgent glowing tones, as The Brothers Union demonstrate their silky vocal talents.
