JUTES RELEASES ‘OVERRATED’ EP & VIDEO FOR ‘WHERE ARE YOU GOING?’

A short while ago, alternative artist Jutes dropped his Overrated EP, along with the music video for the EP’s final single, “Where Are You Going?”

Recently signed to Capitol Records, Jutes grew up in Kars, Ontario, where his father, a drummer, introduced him to the music of Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Van Halen, while his friends pointed him in the direction of hip-hop, acquainting him with OutKast’s Andre 3000 and Ludacris.

Later, Jutes studied filmmaking at Humber College in Toronto, where he laid down raps in his dorm, on his computer.

Jutes told Rachel Campbell of AltPress, “It was the only way to get away from the depression I was feeling over having paid all this money to go to school and realizing that I didn’t want to be there,” he says. “I love creating shit across the board, but when I started making music, it was a whole different thing. It was my only escape.”

After dropping out, he started releasing a series of singles, in 2015. One year later, he made big waves with the release of “Cocaine Cinderella,” followed by pushing in a new direction with “Start Over,” which departed from his erstwhile hip-hop vibe and incorporated the rock dynamics inculcated by his father.

In 2018, Jutes relocated to SoCal, where he worked with a bunch of artists such as Avedon, Omer Fedi, as well as hooking up with Andrew Luce and Miles Wesley.

There’s a bewitching allurement to this song, vaguely reminiscent of Post Malone, but plusher.

Again, according to the AltPress’ Rachel Campbell, Jutes explained, “I was hanging out with my homie Andrew Luce listening to music, and we decided to make a messy, shitty garage-rock song. We had also been listening to a bunch of Gorillaz, so naturally, we blended the two vibes. I’ll be honest: The hook was an off-the-cuff freestyle that just felt really good and nostalgic, so I went with it. A few days later, I played it for my friend Miles Wesley, and he grabbed my guitar and started playing that little guitar melody part over the post-chorus.”

The result was “Everyone Knows,” establishing Jutes’ inimitable pye-dog sound, a blend of alt-rock, hip-hop, and pop-punk.

Encompassing seven-tracks, the EP commences with “Where Are You Going?,” opening on alt-rock guitars flowing into an infectious hip-hop-flavored melody. The fusion of flavors gives the tune a nuanced savor chock-full of tantalizing textures.

From a purely subjective viewpoint, entry points include the title track, a creamy, muscular hip-hop number with heady R&B aromas blended with hints of pop relish. There’s a bewitching allurement to this song, vaguely reminiscent of Post Malone, but plusher. “Everyone Knows” blends tints of pop-punk with alt-rock guitars, producing what I call scrumptious emo-laced pop-punk.

“Back To You” really knocked me out, amalgamating luminous pop-punk tangs with trap-lite rhythmic pulses, as Jutes’ affluent buttery tones infuse the lyrics with tasty quixotic aspects.

For a fact, the entire EP is stellar, rife with contagious mélanges of alt-rock, pop-punk, and hefty hip-hop oomph. Jutes has it going on!
