Country pop duo 17 Memphis just dropped a new single, entitled “Strangers.” And it's grandly excellent.
Made up of producer Felix Snow and singer Chelsea Todd, prior to Memphis 17, the pair collaborated as TYSM, a pop project. An award-winning platinum producer, Snow has worked with Kiiara, as well as writing and producing Young Thug, Lil Uzi Vert, and Katy Perry. On her part, Todd grew up in a small town in Texas listening to Patsy Cline, switching to pop music later on.
After taking a road trip through the South, Snow and Todd elected to change the focus of their sound from pop to country pop. Shortly thereafter, they released their first single, “Leather and Levi’s,” followed by “Honey Jack,” "Lonely Off These Lips," "Backseat Lovin'," and "Under the Night.” They released their first EP, Three Coors & The Truth, in 2018.
The duo’s fresh sound blends elements of classic country, pop, and even hints of trap into a tasty brew full of smooth innovative music and delicious vocals.
Layers of glistening synth hues infuse the harmonics with creamy iridescent aromas, topped by Todd’s scrumptiously gorgeous voice.
“Strangers” opens on emerging soft tones flowing into gentle gleaming guitars. As the rhythm enters on a thumping kick drum, the tune takes on electro-pop textures flavored with tinctures of cool alt-country. Layers of glistening synth hues infuse the harmonics with creamy iridescent aromas, topped by Todd’s scrumptiously gorgeous voice.
Todd’s voice, rich and inflected with tasty drawling nuances imbues the lyrics with sleek velvety timbres aglow with cap-a-pie sumptuous savors. A shimmering, rippling breakdown crowned by Todd’s dulcet voice slowly gathers energy and expands into the plush chorus. When Snow’s voice joins Todd’s, the resulting harmonies surge with cashmere surfaces.
The combination of alt-country bouquets, electro-pop sheens, and suggestions of dream-pop drift give “Strangers” a mellifluous flow both resonant and elegant.
With “Strangers,” 17 Memphis deliver creamy coruscating colors riding a beguiling rhythm, along with the marvelous voice of Chelsea Todd.
